Vettori out, Astle called up to Black Caps

Uncapped all-rounder Todd Astle has earned a New Zealand Test call-up for the Black Caps’ Sri Lankan tour beginning later this month.

The Canterbury player is the only new face in either of the two squads named by national selection manager Kim Littlejohn on Thursday.

“He has the ability to contribute in all three facets of the game and deserves his opportunity after a putting in consistent performances over a number of seasons,” Littlejohn said.

Former captain Daniel Vettori will miss the tour as he struggles to manage a troublesome achilles tendon.

Vettori, 33, says the injury is chronic and, along with the imminent arrival of his third child, will force him to reassess his goals.

He hopes to be fit for the tour of South Africa in January followed by a home series against England.

Littlejohn says the selectors have kept faith with the bulk of the players from recent tours and the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

Littlejohn says it has been decided to rest opening batsman Martin Guptill for the T20 and 50-over matches.

Doug Bracewell will also miss the short-form matches, instead spending time working on a few minor technical issues with his action.

The short-form squad includes 12 players who featured in the recent World Twenty20, along with Trent Boult, Andrew Ellis and Tom Latham who played in the last ODI series against the West Indies.

BJ Watling will return to New Zealand after the one-day matches, looking for more game time in the Plunket Shield four-day matches.

ODI and Twenty20 squad: Ross Taylor (capt), Trent Boult, Andrew Ellis, James Franklin, Roneel Hira, Rob Nicol, Tom Latham, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

Test squad: Taylor, Todd Astle, Boult, Doug Bracewell, Daniel Flynn, Franklin, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Nicol, Jeetan Patel, Southee, Kruger van Wyk, Neil Wagner, Williamson.
