SA shun Dan Christian again in Shield

Fiery allrounder Dan Christian has again been shunned by South Australia as his hot temper lands him in more trouble.

Christian was overlooked for SA’s Sheffield Shield side to play NSW within hours of being sanctioned for an obscene on-field outburst.

Cricket Australia (CA) issued Christian with an official reprimand for breaching CA’s code of behaviour during SA’s one-day loss to NSW at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of using language that was “obscene, offensive or insulting and/or making an obscene gesture” when SA were bowling against the Blues.

Christian last November was banned by SA hierarchy for damaging dressing rooms when dismissed on three separate occasions.

SA suspended the allrounder for one Shield game and Christian has been overlooked since.

Christian remained on the selection outer for the Shield game against the Blues starting on Tuesday even though the Redbacks were without their most-talented core of Phil Hughes, Callum Ferguson, Nathan Lyon and Kane Richardson – all on national duties with the Test team or Australia A.

Instead of Christian, SA plumped for allrounder Jake Brown, who last played for the state four years ago when he failed to take a wicket and made 37 runs from four innings in two matches.

SA sit third on the Shield table with 18 points, one ahead of the fourth-placed Blues. Victoria and Queensland are equal leaders on 22 points.

NSW captain Stephen O’Keefe will return after being sidelined with split webbing in a hand while paceman Gurinder Sandhu is in line for his first-class debut as a possible replacement for fellow quick Josh Hazlewood (foot injury).

SA: Johan Botha (capt), Jake Brown, Alex Carey, Tom Cooper, Travis Head, Michael Klinger, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Sam Raphael, Chad Sayers, Carl Tietjens, Daniel Worrall (12th man to be named)

NSW: Stephen O’Keefe (capt), Trent Copeland, Doug Bollinger, David Dawson, Brad Haddin, Scott Henry, Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Ben Rohrer, Gurinder Sandhu, Chris Tremain, Adam Zampa (12th man to be named).
