Senior batsman Mike Hussey says while Australia need to quickly settle on their best 11, they also must give medium-pacer Clint McKay a chance to prove himself in their World Twenty20 warm-up games.

McKay missed Australia’s one-day international and T20 series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates earlier this month with a hamstring problem.

But the big Victorian is pressing for selection for the warm-up games against New Zealand on Saturday and England on Monday.

By game three of the Pakistan series earlier this week, Australia’s frontline bowling attack consisted of pacemen Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Shane Watson plus spinner Brad Hogg.

Watson is Australia’s highest-ranked T20 bowler and opens the batting while Cummins and Starc took three wickets each in game three to prove their worth which could make things tough for the unlucky McKay.

“He (McKay) has proven he’s done very well in one-day cricket and T20 over a period of time. He’ll definitely get a chance in a couple of warm-up games to show his worth,” Australia’s No.3 batsman Hussey said on Friday.

However Hussey stressed the importance of a settled line-up.

“Twenty20 is such an up-and-down game really that it’s nice if you can find your balanced team and then you stick with it for as long as possible,” he said.

“Give the players the confidence to be able to go out there and know that this one innings or this one bowling performance isn’t the be-all and end-all.”

No.6 batsman Cameron White scored 15, five and a duck in the Pakistan series as Australia ponder whether allrounders Glenn Maxwell and Dan Christian can play in the same side.

But former Australia T20 skipper White has some outstanding form under his belt in 2012 at domestic T20 level in India and England.

“Sometimes you have to walk in and try to hit the second ball for six and you can get out. That’s what the team demands so that’s what you have to do,” White said this week.

“Even if you face 15 balls at the end of the innings, to be able to hit a couple out of middle just to get the feel of it can give you a bit of confidence.”

Hussey said it was important to back players such as White in such a fickle format of the game.

“I don’t know what they’re thinking, (captain) George Bailey and (coach) Mickey Arthur, but I would hope that’s the line they’re thinking,” Hussey said.

“He’s doing exactly what’s being asked of him by the team and the game situation.”
