Pace bowler Steven Finn says it’s all about execution for England as they look to wrap up the Twenty20 series against New Zealand with victory at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Friday.
England began the three-match series with a comprehensive 40-run win in Auckland on Sunday before the Black Caps bounced back with a stunning 55-run victory to level the series in Hamilton on Tuesday.
England’s bowling attack lost its collective mojo as the New Zealanders, led by captain Brendon McCullum’s 38-ball 74, belted out 6-192 before skittling the tourists for 137.
Finn isn’t too concerned about the result reversal, and says very little changed between the two matches.
“Our basic principles were exactly the same – we still wanted to do it,” he said on Thursday.
“We just have to make sure we nail what we want to do – we have to make sure we execute our plans, and that’s when we’ll win games of cricket.”
Finn, who picked up 3-39 in the first T20 but went wicketless for 33 runs in the second, is happy with the way he’s bowling, particularly as he works hard to stop knocking over the stumps in his delivery stride.
“It’s not something that can preoccupy my mind in the game but, every day in training, I’m working hard on trying to eradicate it,” he said.
“It’s improving every day and, when we get out there in the game, it’s not happening as frequently as it used to.
“I feel as though I’ve been in good rhythm since I’ve been over here in New Zealand.”
Finn admits England’s performance in the second T20 bore little resemblance to their more-focused effort in the first, but says it did not have much to do with a lift in aggression from the Black Caps in Hamilton.
“It can appear there was more aggression or more feistiness, I suppose, but we go out there and concentrate on what we want to do.
“If they want to be more aggressive or whatever, it’s not something that fazes us – we concentrate on trying to nail our skills,” he said.
“They played an excellent game in Hamilton, but hopefully we can come back here and put together that template we did in the first game.”
