Vineys sweat on Melbourne’s AFL call

Melbourne great Todd Viney expects a tough conversation with his wife Meg if the AFL club decide not to recruit their highly-rated son Jack.

Gold Coast are likely to formally express their interest in the younger Viney at next Monday’s father-son bidding meeting.

If that happens, the Demons must decide whether to use their first pick at No.3 on him.

Todd is much more than an interested parent in this process – he will be part of the decision as Melbourne’s player development and strategy manager.

“It would be a great opportunity for him to play, he’s always wanted to do it,” Todd said.

“I’m just probably going to have a little bit of trouble at home, explaining to the wife how I just lost our son.”

Jack has made it clear he will do everything he can to make the Demons regret their decision if they decide against giving up their No.3 pick for him.

Melbourne are having a busy trade period, recruiting two-time Geelong premiership player Shannon Byrnes through free agency.

They have also expressed interest in Collingwood pair Chris Dawes and Sharrod Wellingham, whose futures at the Magpies are uncertain.
