2012 AFL Finals Week 1 preview – Geelong Cats vs Fremantle Dockers

Saturday 8th September, MCG

The Saturday night game is the first of the elimination finals with sixth placed Geelong taking on seventh placed Fremantle. The Cats have won six of their past seven; amongst these victories have been wins over the Sydney Swans and premiership favourites, Hawthorn and are displaying some of the form that has made them one of the most dominating sides of the last decade. This vein of form has seen five of the Cats (Tom Hawkins, Joel Selwood, Harry Taylor, Corey Enright and Tom Lonergan) being named this week in the All Australian side. Interestingly, three of the above five are defenders and the Dockers’ attack will need to be at its absolute best if it is to break the Cats stoic defence. The Dockers have won eight of their past nine with three of those matches against sides participating in the finals resulting in a two wins – West Coast 113-48, North 132-79 and a loss to Adelaide (91 – 119) The Dockers will also be casting memories back to the opening round of this season when they accounted for Geelong 105-101.

Geelong love this time of year and has the finals approached, it was no coincidence to see their form pick up. Tom Hawkins has been in stellar form having kicked 62 majors this year and has been well supported by sharp shooter James Podsiadly who has kicked 35 goals and 13 behinds. The will miss the services though of Stevie Johnson who will serve a week’s suspension for rough conduct in last week’s win over Sydney.  Will the Dockers being able to halt the Cats recent momentum? They do have one of the best defensive records of the teams participating in the finals but countering that is the fact that they have the poorest attack. Don’t think they’ll score enough points here to worry the Cats.
