Following five minor placings across her initial six starts, filly Affari has officially broken her maiden status with a commanding all-the-way win at Rosehill.
Jockey James McDonald credited the strategic addition of blinkers for the three-year-old’s overdue victory in Wednesday’s Inglis Xtra Bonus Plate (1200m), suggesting she possesses the potential to progress through the grades.
“She has been promising that,” McDonald stated. “She goes really well. She’s just, for some unknown reason, always found one better but they’ve all been good horses to be fair. Blinkers on definitely worked wonders today. That was a masterstroke and hopefully she can go on.”
By the highly regarded young stallion Home Affairs, Affari was a $370,000 Magic Millions acquisition for Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds. Her Rosehill engagement marked her fifth run of the current campaign, which had previously featured four successive second placings. However, given her determined finish, trainer Chris Waller’s stable representative, Darren Beadman, indicated that her preparation might not yet be concluded.
“Chris is a great judge with that,” Beadman commented. “But when they win like that and they hit the line with purpose like she did, more times than not they come out of that, and they’ll butter up next time.”
Waller and McDonald went on to combine forces with another promising filly, Ballet D’Light, who achieved a debut win in the MyRacehorse Handicap (1100m) two races later.
Beadman mentioned that the daughter of I Am Invincible, who had experienced five trials, had been a work in progress but was now demonstrating her capabilities.
“They’ve been very patient with her. She’s a little bit special,” Beadman said. “James did a lovely job rating the speed and she showed a nice turn of foot.”
The successful Waller-McDonald partnership will be targeting two of the major Sydney spring features at Randwick on Saturday: Joliestar in the $20 million Everest (1200m) and Autumn Glow in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m).
