Fire interrupts Aust tour match v India A

A massive cloud of smoke swept across Chennai’s Guru Nanak College Ground on Saturday as a fire in a shed behind the oval briefly interrupted play in Australia’s tour game against India A.

The fire broke out during the second over of the match, bowled by Australia’s Peter Siddle.

Players became aware of scenes of confusion and raised voices nearby which turned out to be a fire behind the changeroom area in a shed believed to contain building materials.

Play was only stopped for a few minutes but the blaze raged on amid more than 100 onlookers, a fire truck arriving about 15 minutes later.

It’s believed no one was injured in the incident.

Members of Australia’s squad rushed down from their balcony to get a better vantage point as the smoke engulfed the training nets area.

India’s media scribes were evacuated from their tent on the boundary near the training nets because of the fire.
