D-Day for Bliss Street in Stock Stakes 2012

Former West Australian mare Bliss Street faces “D-Day” at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Caulfield trainer Stuart Webb said Bliss Street’s performance in the Group Two Stock Stakes (1600m) could decide whether the four-year-old races on or heads to the breeding barn.

Bliss Street won four times from five starts from March to September last year but it will have been almost a year to the day on Saturday since she last saluted the judge.

Perth trainer Dan Morton paid $100,000 for Bliss Street as a yearling and she fetched $450,000 at this year’s Magic Millions brood mare sale.

She was transferred to Webb after her autumn campaign but so far the trainer hasn’t been overly impressed by her two runs back from a spell.

She beat only one runner home at Caulfield last month then finished seventh of 11 over 1400 metres at the same track on September 1.

“Forget the first run because the track was wet but she will have to show more from now on,” Webb said.

“I need her to show me that she still has her heart in it and can go on or it will be off to the breeding barn for her.”

Webb said Bliss Street’s future was virtually on the line in the $220,000 event.

“Saturday is a bit of a D-Day for her but she is a four-times winner and will have to give me something,” he said.

“She doesn’t have to run a place but she will need to put in a good run, just to prove she still wants to do it.

“She was bought as a brood mare with the possibility of racing but time is running out.”

Bliss Street won the 2011 Group Three Sires’ Produce Stakes at Ascot and came east in the spring to win the Thousand Guineas Prelude at Caulfield in September.

She was twice a runner-up at Moonee Valley and Flemington last October but her most promising performances this year have been two third placings at Ascot in February and third in the Group Two Kewney Stakes won by Empress Rock at Flemington in March.
