Beth Mooney (60 off 50) underpinned a fast-finishing total of 5/155. Player of the Match Georgia Wareham (3/17) and Megan Schutt (3/28) got Australia home, taking wickets at regular and crucial intervals.
But the nagging storyline ahead of the semi is champion all-rounder Ellyse Perry’s injury absence. Australia have never played a T20 World Cup match without her. But Sophie Molineux is a more than handy replacement.
South Africa had an easier time of it in Pool B, going through undefeated.
After kicking off with a thrilling six-wicket win over main group rivals England, the Proteas crushed Thailand by 113 runs – with Lizelle Lee plundering a century – and outlasted Pakistan for a 17-run victory.
Tuesday’s group stage-closing clash with West Indies was abandoned, which could stunt South Africa’s momentum. They also have an injury worry with veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp in doubt.
