England-South Africa 1st ODI washed out

The first one-day international between England and South Africa has been washed out with just 5.3 overs bowled in Cardiff.

England reached 0-37 on Friday as Ian Bell raced to 26 not out from 18 balls, with two sixes and two fours.

Captain Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 10 when play was abandoned at Sophia Gardens.

The morning start had already been delayed to 1400 GMT and after a single delivery from Morne Morkel – a wide – the players went off for rain.

Although play resumed after 10 minutes, a downpour forced the players off again and with no prospect of a resumption the match was officially abandoned.

The second ODI is at Southampton on Tuesday.
