Preview:

The host nation were stunned in the tournament opener on Friday, going down to India by 17 runs.

Jess Jonassen (2/24) led the Australian bowling attack as India reached 4/132 from their 20 overs.

Alyssa Healy (51 off 35) made a belated return to form and Ashleigh Gardner (34 off 36) made a handy contribution. But no other Australian made more than six runs and they were bowled out for 115 in the last over.

Australia bounced back with a nerve-wracking five-wicket win with three balls to spare against Sri Lanka on Monday.

Nicola Carey (2/18) and Molly Strano (2/23) helped restrict the underdogs to 6/122. But a disastrous 3/10 start put Australia under the pump. A magnificent 95-run stand between captain Meg Lanning (41 off 44) and Rachael Haynes (60 off 47) ultimately put the champs in a winning position.

Bangladesh have won just two of the 14 T20 World Cup matches. But despite a lack of international cricket, they are an emerging force.

The Lady Tigers beat Pakistan by five runs in a warm-up fixture last week. Murshida Kahtun (43 off 38) and Jahanara Alam (4/22) starred.

They lost few admirers in an 18-run loss to India on Tuesday. Captain Salma Khatun and Panna Ghosh both finished with figures of 2/25 from their four overs as India set a target of 143. Nigar Sultana (35 off 26) and Murshida Khatun (30 off 26) showed encouraging signs with the bat.

The status of the respective teams is reflected by Australia’s $1.05 price as Best of the Day favourite – and they should salute. But it could be tighter than the odds suggest.

Opener Beth Mooney has missed out at the T20 World Cup so far, posting 6 and 6. But with three fifties and a century in her previous eight T20Is since September, a big knock doesn’t feel far away.
