No evidence to support assault: Lions

The Brisbane Lions say a club investigation has found there is no evidence to support claims a high profile player assaulted a wheelchair-bound man on the eve of Mad Monday celebrations.

In the same week St Kilda’s Clinton Jones was fined $3000 for setting a dwarf entertainer alight during the AFL club’s end-of-season drinks, Brisbane police received a complaint that the disabled man was tipped out of his wheelchair while waiting for a taxi on Sunday night.

The disabled man was reportedly approached by a group of men at a Toowong taxi rank in Brisbane’s inner west and allegedly tipped the out of his wheelchair when a cab approached.

When the wheelchair-bound man protested that the cab was meant for him, the players allegedly threw food at him as he lay on the ground.

However, the Lions said their internal probe had found conflicting reports of the alleged incident.

“The club notes significant discrepancies in the versions of events reported to media at various times and those provided to Queensland Police and the club,” a Lions statement said.

“The club can confirm that a number of its players were in the area near where the alleged incident took place.

“The club’s inquiries, however, have not found any evidence that its players acted in an unlawful manner towards the gentleman concerned.

“The club can confirm a player, Daniel Rich, wheeled the gentleman some metres towards a taxi rank, however, at no stage was this action intended to cause the gentleman any distress or harm.

“At this stage there is no evidence to support other claims made in the media today.”

The allegations emerged just days after Jones was fined, forced to apologise and make a charity donation after using a gas lighter to set the dwarf entertainer’s clothes alight at an end of season Saints function in South Melbourne on Monday.

The entertainer did not make a formal complaint to police.
