Geelong Cats vs Fremantle Dockers 2013 AFL Finals Week 1 preview and tips

Geelong host Fremantle line up against each other on Saturday in the second final.

Both teams produced efforts last week that were not of finals standards and from a punting view point, would think it’s best to rule a line through both matches.

Geelong played in patches and kicked poorly (15.22) against the lowly ranked Brisbane Lions with history almost repeating itself with the Lions kicking six majors in the final quarter, to fall only one point short of another outstanding comeback win over the Cats.

Brisbane were aggressive and served it up to Geelong and a game of such a nature should serve as great preparation for the Cats.

Fremantle, who played after Sydney lost to Hawthorn on Friday night and therefore were assured of finishing third, left the best part of half its starting line-up at home to rest up for this clash as the remainder of the roster flew to Melbourne to take on St. Kilda.

The Dockers line-up was further depleted with several more late injuries before game.

The Dockers were never in the hunt and were kept scoreless by St. Kilda in the first quarter and to six majors for the entire match.

It’ll be a full strength side that takes the park this week though and it’s a side that has competed well all year.

Fremantle won both games over Geelong last year but earlier this year, at Simonds Stadium, Geelong handed Fremantle one of their heaviest defeats of the year, 85 – 44.

That being said, it was second lowest points registered by Geelong all year (lowest against Hawthorn 82) and it’s this aspect of the Dockers game – their defence, the best in the league this year, that they’ll rely on.

It will be interesting to see if the fresh legs of Fremantle, up against a Geelong outfit that had to fight for every point last week, take effect late in the game.

If the Dockers can stick with the Cats, it may prove a vital factor.
