Diameter poised for Up And Coming Stakes return in 2026

Chris Waller’s stable is set to be represented by Group One-placed mare Diameter in the upcoming three-year-old features at Rosehill, as promising colt Central Europe is being saved for a later start.

Although part-owned by Coolmore and nominated for prestigious races like the Golden Rose and Cox Plate, Central Europe will not contest Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes (1100m), with Waller preferring to manage his race schedule.

Central Europe demonstrated promise with an encouraging third-place finish first-up behind fillies Chilly Girl and Blue Door in the Rosebud (1100m). He is now slated to compete in the Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 12.

“I just feel if we run him too many times, he’s not going to get to his grand finals as well as he could if we space his runs,” Waller explained.

“He goes third-up into the Golden Rose, and then he can either go up in distance to a Caulfield Guineas or back in distance to races like the Everest and the Coolmore sprint.”

Diameter, who had entries for both the San Domenico and the Up And Coming Stakes (1300m), has been selected by the stable for the latter, where she will carry the equal topweight of 61kg.

The mare, a winner of the Fernhill Handicap (1600m) at two and a placegetter at the highest level in the Champagne Stakes (1600m), is considered by Waller to possess more speed than her juvenile form might suggest.

“He’s Group One placed over a mile, and a winner over a mile, but he’s by Brazen Beau so I think he’ll find some speed and be competitive first-up,” Waller remarked.

Joint Venture, another horse from Waller’s stable, is also set to compete in the Up And Coming Stakes, having secured her chance at Group-level racing with a determined victory on a heavy track at Rosehill during July.

The San Domenico Stakes has attracted a field of eight runners, including the highly anticipated return of Golden Slipper winner Guest House and the third-placegetter Music Time.

Guest House is aiming to achieve a rare feat, becoming the first winner of the Golden Slipper to also claim the San Domenico Stakes since Tierce achieved this in 1991.
