Jennings brothers pushing for NRL debuts

The Jennings name could live on at Penrith this year with livewire brothers Rob and George pushing for NRL debuts.

The younger brothers of NSW State of Origin representative and Sydney Roosters star Michael, nominated by Panthers skipper Peter Wallace as standouts during pre-season training and in contention for first grade in 2015.

Wallace said both were cut from the same cloth as their older brother and were well-placed to take advantage of opportunities in the Panthers backline early in the season.

With Josh Mansour and Jamal Idris unlikely to be fit for the side’s season opener against Canterbury on March 8, the Jennings brothers could get a chance to press their claims.

Mansour underwent a shoulder reconstruction after representing Australia in the Four Nations while Idris is back training after spinal surgery but expected to miss the first month of the season.

“They’ve got a bit of speed and strength and they’re very skilled, George more so,” Wallace told AAP.

“They’re both exciting players for the club to have.”

Michael left the Panthers at the end of the 2012 NRL season but Rob and George chose not to follow in his footsteps and stay at the foot of the mountains.

After coming through the Panthers under 20s and NSW Cup, George, 21, spent all of last year on the sidelines after dislocating his elbow in the Auckland Nines and undergoing surgery in April after a setback.

Robert has been described as having more potential than famous older brother Michael and ended the year representing the Australian Schoolboys side on a tour of Europe.

Panthers management are so confident in his talent that last year they promoted him to NSW Cup from the under 18s, bypassing the under 20s.

“If you look at their brother (Michael), you can tell where they come from,” Wallace said.

“I played with Michael and they (Robert and George) have the same qualities. They’re exciting.”
