Mostert snares Sydney Supercars pole

Ford’s Chaz Mostert has snared pole position for Saturday’s Supercars race at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The Prodrive Racing Australia star clocked a quickest lap of one minute, 28.8272 seconds midway through the 15-minute qualifying session to secure his fourth pole position of the season.

Mostert has a strong recent history at the venue, having won two of the three races at last year’s event and finishing third in the other one.

Holden pair Shane Van Gisbergen (1:29.0806) and Jamie Whincup (1:29.1480) qualified second and third as their championship battle heats up.

Whincup will become just the second man in Supercars history to claim 100 career race wins with victory.

Volvo’s Scotty McLaughlin, fastest in practice on Friday, qualified eighth just ahead of defending series champion Mark Winterbottom and Holden veteran Craig Lowndes.

Lowndes is making his 599th Supercars’ race start.

Saturday’s 31-lap race starts at 4.30pm
