Thousands farewell Hughes

Phillip Hughes has been remembered as “one of a kind” country kid who dared to dream and achieved greatness in cricket.

Hughes’ cousin Nino Ramunno told mourners at the cricketer’s funeral service that his life showed “if you set your mind to it, you can achieve greatness.”

Mr Ramunno said his cousin “was one of a kind, a young kid from the country who dare to dream big.”

Mr Ramunno told the service Hughes was a large baby who grew up loving to play hundreds of hours of cricket with his brother Jason in their hometown of Macksville, before moving to Sydney to pursue his cricket career and complete his last year of school.

Mr Ramunno said despite being separated from his family, he was always “a mummy’s boy.”

“He also loved a mirror, (but) he was always a country boy at heart,” he said.

“His mental strength was beyond his years … Phillip simply loved cricket.”
