Lions leader Zorko in mix for Eagles

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan will give captain Dayne Zorko until Saturday morning to prove his fitness to face West Coast later that night.

The skipper has been frustrated by Achilles soreness since he kicked the sealer in last Saturday’s nervy AFL-return win over Fremantle.

Zorko has been named to play and is optimistic he can shrug off the ailment, with Harris Andrews poised to captain the club in his 100th game if he’s ruled out.

“We need to have a look at him, but will leave it as long as tomorrow morning to see how he is,” Fagan said of the midfielder.

“I’m not sure which way we’ll go, but at this stage he’s named and in team and no doubt he’ll give it his best shot to be okay, but we won’t take any risks.

“(If unavailable) we’d just expect others to step up, that’s the culture we’re trying to build.”

Adelaide recruit Cameron Ellis-Yolmen could be the next man up after impressing in last weekend’s scratch match against Fremantle’s unused squad members.

Archie Smith was also strong in that clash and will return at the expense of ruckman Stef Martin, who has recovered from a round one knee injury but strained a hamstring against the Dockers.

The Eagles will be without star defender Jeremy McGovern (suspended), while Fagan has demanded a full-team effort to nullify the visitor’s strike power up front.

“The challenge is for the whole team,” he said of how to handle tall forwards Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy.

“What you’ve got to try to disallow is their ability to move the ball quickly into that area of the ground.

“You saw last night with Hawthorn (beating Richmond); they couldn’t do that last week against Geelong but their defence was outstanding against a very potent Richmond team.

“It’s no different for us.”

Brisbane local Andrews will play his 100th game while Hawthorn recruit Grant Birchall will notch 250 in his new Lions colours.
