Hawks’ stars named in AFL NAB Cup squad

Hawthorn have named a strong squad, including reigning Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin, for Friday night’s opener to the AFL’s pre-season competition.

Captain Luke Hodge, fellow stars Sam Mitchell, Cyril Rioli, Josh Gibson and Jordan Lewis and ex-Adelaide recruit Jack Gunston are also in a 34-man squad to take on Richmond and North Melbourne.

But Jarryd Roughead, still working his way back from the achilles injury which ruined his 2011 season, will not be part of the pre-season campaign, which begins with the Etihad Stadium triple-header.

The Tigers and Kangaroos also named most of their stars.

Two-time best and fairest Brett Deledio was the most notable absentee from Richmond’s squad, after injuring his hamstring in an intraclub practice match last week.

But captain Chris Newman, Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin were all included.

The Tigers also named ex-Adelaide ruckman Ivan Maric, mature-aged recruit Steven Morris and national draftees Brandon Ellis, Todd Elton, and Matt Arnot.

Missing Richmond players included injured tall trio Kelvin Moore, David Astbury and Ben Griffiths, while Daniel Connors, who recently completed a club-imposed suspension for off-field misbehaviour, was also left out.

North’s squad included ruck pairing Todd Goldstein and Hamish McIntosh and stars Brent Harvey and Drew Petrie, as well as new skipper Andrew Swallow.

Absent were midfield star Daniel Wells, who is on blood-thinning medication, and rookie Majak Daw, who is under a club suspension for lying about missing a rehabilitation session.
