Force re-sign Super Rugby hooker Charles

The Western Force have re-signed in-form hooker Nathan Charles for the next two Super Rugby seasons.

Charles, who is a national ambassador for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, has become a regular in the Force starting line-up since arriving at the Perth-based franchise as an injury replacement in 2010.

The 23-year-old has notched 32 caps for the Force, with his good form earning him call-ups to Wallabies training camps over the past 18 months.

Charles had been chased by other Australian clubs, but said the decision to remain in Perth was an easy one.

“The forward pack at the club is a really tight bunch. I feel that I have been able to get the best out of myself by working alongside those guys,” Charles said.

“With front rowers like Pek Cowan, Kieran Longbottom and Salesi Ma’afu all committed to staying at the club for the long term, I know we’ll have a formidable pack for years to come.

“Having good people around you is paramount to developing your own skills which ultimately will help the team.”

Force forwards coach Nick Stiles said Charles had played a key role in the club’s strong set-piece results over the past two seasons.

“His set-piece skills, in particular his line-out throwing, has definitely been one of the major contributors to the increased success rates we’ve been able to achieve in that area of the game,” Stiles said.

The Force are still attempting to lure several big-name players to the franchise after missing out on the services of Wallabies scrumhalf Will Genia, who initially agreed to come to Perth but then re-signed with the Reds for a further three seasons.

The Force, who sit last in the Australian conference with just two wins from nine games, take on the Cheetahs in South Africa on Sunday morning.
