FIFA unveils 2013 Confederations Cup logo

Football’s governing body FIFA on Wednesday unveiled the logo for the 2013 Confederations Cup, 500 days before the tournament’s opening game in Brasilia.

The green, blue, yellow, white and red logo features the Rufous-bellied thrush, a native Brazilian bird species viewed as a national symbol, with wings extended next to a football.

The Confederations Cup, a prelude to the World Cup which Brazil will also host a year later, will be held from next June 15 to 30, with games scheduled in the Brazilian cities of Rio, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza.

Two other cities, Recife and Salvador, are still awaiting final approval from FIFA and Brazil’s 2014 Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Held every four years, the Confederations Cup brings together the title winners from each of the world’s six confederations, in addition to reigning world champions Spain and hosts Brazil.

The final will be played in Rio’s famed Maracana stadium on June 30.

“We’re determined to put on a great fiesta next year, a genuine Festival of Champions,” said Brazilian football icon Ronaldo, who was a Confederations Cup winner in 1997 in Saudi Arabia.

“I think that in Brazil (in 2013), we’ll have the strongest set of national sides since the tournament began,” added Ronaldo, who is head of the 2014 World Cup organising committee.

“It will be a great opportunity for Brazilian fans to watch top-level football in new stadiums, as well as to give the world a little taste of our hospitality,” he also said.

Brazil is also hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics.
