Frayne and Cole qualify for Olympics

Versatile jumper Henry Frayne and evergreen hurdler Brendan Cole will both be making their Olympic debuts in London after showing nerves of steel on day one of the Australian trials in Melbourne.

Frayne left it until the last jump of the night in the triple jump before recording a personal best of 17.23m, just 3cm past the automatic qualifying mark.

The 21-year-old had produced an even bigger jump of 17.34m in the penultimate round at Lakeside Stadium on Friday night, but that was achieved with the aid of an illegal tailwind.

Frayne will also be hoping to qualify for the London Games in the long jump on Saturday night, having registered a huge personal best of 8.27m last month at the Sydney Track Classic.

If successful, he will become the first Australian in 48 years to contest both events at an Olympics.

“It means so much to me,” said Frayne.

“It’s been so close all season and I knew it was just one jump away. To get it on the last jump in the selection qualifiers – I’m just stoked.

“The pressure’s off, it sets you up for the Olympics because you can go about your normal preparation.

“Hopefully that means I can perform better at the Olympics.”

The biggest surprise of the night came in the men’s 400m hurdles, where the 30-year-old Cole flew home to win in 49.39 seconds, only four-hundredths of a second outside his personal best.

“It’s huge, it’s been a long time coming,” he said.

“The last thing I hadn’t done in my athletic career was make it to the Olympics.

“I honestly didn’t expect it, it was windy, so coming out here and doing that, I just can’t believe it.”
