Titans’ search for pivot almost over

Auditions for the role of Scott Prince’s sidekick may have dragged out, but the Titans halfback has no problem with the process after a string of five-eighth cameos at the Gold Coast.

The Titans will play their final NRL pre-season trial against North Queensland Cowboys in Mackay on Saturday night but are yet to nail down the man to partner Prince in the halves.

Indeed the Titans have been looking for a regular pivot since Mat Rogers’ initial retirement at the end of 2010.

Jordan Rankin and William Zillman will share five-eighth duties against the Cowboys this weekend.

But the availability of Canterbury recruit Aidan Sezer for a Queensland Cup trial this weekend has given Titans coach John Cartwright more food for thought ahead of their NRL season opener against North Queensland in Townsville in a fortnight.

Either way Prince had no problem with Cartwright’s meticulous approach to finding a five-eighth.

“I think it is important we get the combination right,” Prince said.

“It’s good to have Zilly back after missing the last couple of trials.

“And it will be good to give both an opportunity to wear the No.6 (against the Cowboys).

“I am sure in the lead-up to the first game when we go into camp we will narrow it down just to the one (pivot).”

Zillman combines with Prince for the first time in the pre-season after missing two games with a back strain.

Rankin impressed in his absence – especially in last weekend’s trial win over Brisbane – judging by Prince.

“He was busy and wasn’t afraid to take the line on as well – in a five-eighth that is something that we need,” he said.

“And I have faith in them (Zillman, Rankin) holding the reins when I take the line on and get tackled.”

Adding further intrigue, highly-rated Sezer will run out for Burleigh against Redcliffe this weekend after the ex-Canterbury under 20s star returned from a knee injury earlier than expected.

It may not just be the Titans’ next halves combination unveiled in Mackay this weekend – Prince said the Gold Coast would not be afraid to reveal some plays ahead of their NRL season opener.

“I think it is important to have all guns blazing and to win the match,” he said of the trial.

“I think it is also important that we trial some of the plays that we have up our sleeve but not to give too much away.

“It is weird we play them in a trial and then two weeks later we face them in the first round – but we will go out there to win.”
