Newmarket still possible for Black Caviar

A defence of her Newmarket Handicap crown next month remains an option for unbeaten champion Black Caviar.

The five-year-old on Tuesday was one of five Peter Moody trained sprinters paid up as first acceptors for the $1 million feature sprint at Flemington on March 10.

Moody also accepted with mares King’s Rose, Curtana and Kulgrinda while his sole male representative is Master Harry.

Black Caviar’s chances of lining up in the Newmarket depend on her not running Saturday’s Futurity Stakes and abandonment of the idea of running in Dubai’s Golden Shaheen on World Cup night on March 31.

Connections also have to consider how much weight she will have to carry with estimates of 61kg or more.

Moody is chasing his third Newmarket in as many years after Wanted also won the feature in 2010.

Dual Group One winner Hay List is also among the 39 first acceptors for the Newmarket.

Mark Kavanagh has paid up for Liveandletdie and speedy three-year-old fillies Miss Stellabelle and Celebrity Girl while fellow Flemington trainer Michael Moroney still has the well-performed African Pulse among the remaining sprinters.

Interstate raiders include John O’Shea’s Foxwedge and as well as the Robert Heathcote duo Buffering and Woorim, Temple of Boom from the Tony Gollan stable, Sydneysiders Ilovethiscity, Secret Admirer, Rain Affair and Albert The Fat while Western Australia is represented by Waratah’s Secret and Hareeba Stakes winner Like an Eagle.

Meanwhile 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain and reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed headline a strong list of 22 first acceptors for the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 10.

Victoria Derby champion Sangster also remains among the entries as does 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Efficient’s owner Lloyd Williams has also accepted with Green Moon, Mourayan and Tanby in a bid to win the Cup again after Zipping’s success in 2010.

Americain, who last spring won the Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) and the Sandown Classic (2400m) and finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup, will have his first start for David Hayes in the Australian Cup while Bart Cummings is looking for his 14th Australian Cup accepted with German import Illo and Precedence.

Notable omissions from the first round of acceptances are the Williams duo of At First Sight and Midas Touch, West Australian stayer Ranger and the Chris Waller-trained Shoot Out.

Only two fillies, Mosheen and Soft Sand, remain among the 31 acceptances for the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 3.

Mosheen, despite suffering a surprise defeat in The Vanity (1400m) on 18 February at Flemington, is still second favourite for the Guineas behind the Darley-prepared Helmet.
