Late Mail: Tattersall’s Tiara 2014 day Tips – Eagle Farm racecourse

The Brisbane Winter Carnival wraps up this Saturday with the final Group l race of the season, the $500,000 Sky Racing Tatts Tiara (1400m), highlighting the day. Cosmic Endeavour holds sway in betting quite clearly after her dominant Dane Ripper success a fortnight back. Her main dangers will come courtesy of Sydney, where the likes of Steps In Time, Catkins and Red Tracer all set to take their place.

The support card is fairly solid, headed by the $200,000 Group lll Carlton Draught Tatt’s Cup (2200m) and the $175,000 Group lll W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m).

Race One (12:10) : Carlton Mid Handicap (Class 6) 1200m:

Back Me: Putting Star Sammy on top. He is a very consistent galloper who always busts his gut when racing and knows where the post is. Looked a beaten horse several times in the straight last time out at the Gold Coast, but found plenty when asked for the effort by Cassidy to nail Simply Smart. Meets all of his rivals from there who are racing here much better at the weights, so I’m confident he has them covered, and he maps quite well here.
Big Danger: Bymonashee certainly has the form on the board to be a threat here. Resumed from a freshen up at the Gold Coast and worked home nicely late when third to Vintage Moss. His record at Eagle Farm is poor, but at his last outing here, he was a half length behind subsequent Group l winner Tiger Tees. Repeat of that will see him take a power of beating here.
Roughie: Iona Fast One drops big time in grade here after racing behind the likes of Cape Kidnappers and Big Money, and he hasn’t been too far away from them. Carries the same weight here from when he raced behind them horses, and along with the good draw, he must rate as a chance.

Race Two (12:45) : Hardy Brothers Jewellers Handicap 1200m:

Back Me: Palmera Lad for me here. I thought his run in the Guineas was outstanding given how far back he was and the class of horse he was up against. Before then he was okay in the Fred Best and first up he was excellent in the Gold Coast Guineas. Back to 1200m probably isn’t ideal, but the pace should be right on for him to swoop. Keen to take on Agitate here given he struggles at 1200m and is drawn wide with the big weight.
Big Danger: Architect can be a bit of an enigma, but in recent times, he has showed real consistency in some very strong races. Two back he ran Sacred Star to over a length in the QTC Cup, then just failed to pick up Olympic Anthem last week at Ipswich. He is a bit like Palmera Lad in the sense he will need the speed on, but he’ll be strong at the end of 1200m no doubt.
Roughie: Splendora finds his right race here I feel after contesting the better class three year old races during the Carnival and not disgracing himself. Drops to his level here, and although on face value, his runs have been just okay, he did trial very well prior to his first up run.

Race Three (13:20) : Breakfast Creek Hotel Stakes 1400m:

Back Me: Best bet on the card for me here in Limehills, who took forever to wind up when resuming in the Hampden before savaging the line late to run second to Sports Edition, beaten three parts of a length. Extra furlong looks perfect, drawn to get clear room, and take away the Waterhouse runner here, it is a pretty thin race. Should win with normal luck.
Big Danger: If the top tip is going to get beat, it will come courtesy of Bayrock given Gai and Tommy have dominated the Carnival, especially with the youngsters. The one thing against Bayrock is the fact he had a picnic in front last start at Randwick yet was still run down against a real bunch of pluggers, and his debut run was very disappointing. But he looks as if he’ll get a comfortable lead here, so he has to rate as the main danger.
Roughie: Fixation wasn’t too bad I thought in the Phoenix when working home okay along the rails behind Lucky Tom before getting a touch held up late. That is the weaker form reference here I feel, but Fixation appears to have some upside left and should appreciate a clear run over 1400m.

Race Four (13:55) : Southbank Insurance Brokers Handicap (85) 1400m:

Back Me: Tricky race to sort out. But former Sydney mare Spurs And Sashes has been a revelation since joining the Toby Edmonds camp, winning four times, including his past three outings, all of which on her home track at the Gold Coast. Only time she raced here, she stormed home for an unlucky third. Drawn the paint here, Tommy rides, looks hard to beat.
Big Danger: Noogoora Burr, a bit like his stablemate Architect, can be frustrating to follow, but can bob up without surprising on his day. He worked home okay last week at Ipswich in a bunched finish. He’ll get good speed here to allow him to run on, and I have no doubt the bigger track will suit him better.
Roughie: 2013 Magic Millions Guineas winner Saluter has really struggled since that superb win. Ridden on the speed in the Spear Chief and dropped out badly in the run home to finish near last. Drops back to benchmark grade, and with the claim, he does get in quite well at the weights, so he gets his chance to show improvement.

Race Five (14:30) : W.J. Healy Stakes 1200m:

Back Me: Going for the class horse here in Howmuchdoyouloveme. Back now with his original trainer Con Karakatsanis and I thought his first up run in the Lightning was quite good considering he had the big weight and was wide all the way. Drawn much better, gets in well at the weights, looks great value at $11, Nash rides and the two combined to win this race last year, beating home the Stradbroke winner River Lad.
Big Danger: Cape Kidnappers is racing so well at the moment and is now being punished for it at the weights. Was given a plum steer by Browne to win the Lightning given he was left in front a fair way from home. Will need a more conservative ride with the weight and the rise to 1200m, but if you want a patient steer, there is nearly none better than Browne.
Roughie: Big Money has been fantastic in three runs back from a spell. Dominant open handicap winner first up at Muswellbrook, then swooped hard late to win on his home track during the Scone Carnival before savaging the line late and just failing to pick up Cape Kidnappers in the Lightning. Up to 1200m suits and RT taking the ride is a big advantage.

Race Six (15:05) : Carlton Draught Tatt’s Cup 2200m:

Back Me: Military Move was given a plum steer by McMahon to win the Toowoomba Cup last time out, saving all the ground near the inside, peeling out to the better going and surging late to win right on the post. His run prior to that in the Premier’s Cup was very good and strikes a winnable race here.
Big Danger: Tinto is a really intriguing runner here. To say it is unorthodox would be an understatement. Her Queensland Oaks triumph was dominant and she ran through the 2400m very strongly. That was against her own age and sex, and now has to take on open company with some very tough, seasoned campaigners taking their place. She’ll go very close, but I’d be very cautious.
Roughie: Iggi Pop was a real eye catcher last time out at Rosehill when coming from near last to run a close up fifth to Transonic. Run before that in the Hawkesbury Cup behind Leebaz was solid and good enough to be a force here, and will lap up the rise to 2200m, which is ideal distance range.

Race Seven (15:40) : Sky Racing Tatt’s Tiara 1400m:

Back Me: I think class will come to the fore here and sticking solid with Red Tracer. She was a clear forgive run in the Stradbroke given she was back near last in a farcical run race, and the track was too firm for her liking. The forecast of rain for Thursday and Friday should provide some much needed cushion for her, and I don’t doubt she has lost form given how well she trialled prior to her Stradbroke failure.
Big Danger: All you can do is win and at the moment, Cosmic Endeavour is low flying at present, winning her past two, including last time out when swooping down the outside to record an arrogant Dane Ripper success. I’m fairly confident that no horse from that race will turn the tables on her here, so she has most of her rivals covered here apart from the better performed mares…can she go up another level and win at the highest grade? Certainly.
Roughie: Another mare who is in a rich vein of form is Avoid Lightning, who is fast becoming the in form mare of Australian racing at the moment, spanking her rivals in two runs back from a little freshen up, where she raced behind Cosmic Endeavour and ran second, beaten two lengths. She does get a weight pull on that filly from that race here, and her two wins in Sydney since have been outstanding with heavy imposts. Query at 1400m and at this level, but she won’t get a better chance to have a serious crack.

Race Eight (16:15) : Mercedes Benz Centenary Mile 1600m

Back Me: I was very impressed by the win of Transporter in the Strawberry Road a fortnight back. He had the gun run near the speed, pounced 250m out and lengthened out quite powerfully late to record a dominant victory. Needs some favours from the inside gate given he is a monster of a horse size wise, but has found his best form now and can go right on with it.
Big Danger: Queenstown was backed as if unbeatable when resuming at Rosehill three weeks back, and looked to travel well in the run outside the leader Tromso, but that horse was beautifully rated and found plenty to win. Queenstown stuck on okay for third but was a beaten horse on the turn. Good record at the track, second up and at the mile without success, but the Waterhouse/Berry combination is white hot.
Roughie: Don’t be surprised to see Kingdoms run a forward race here for new trainer Brian Smith. Formerly with John O’Shea and was last seen down the track in the Lexus on Derby Day trying to qualify for the Melbourne Cup when seventh to Ruscello. That’s just about eight months ago, but I really liked the way he let down in a recent trial win. If there is a knockout, it’ll come courtesy of him.
