Busuttin seeks strong Sangster outing

Cambridge trainer Trent Busuttin is hoping his Victoria Derby winner Sangster can run in the first five as he begins a five-race autumn campaign on Saturday.

Sangster runs in the Group One weight-for-age Waikato Sprint (1400m), a race likely to be too short for him.

His opponents include multiple Group One winner Mufhasa, who is aiming to win the race for the third time in four years, and Guiseppina, conqueror of top NSW sprinter Atomic Force in the Telegraph Handicap last month.

“He’s come up super but I really couldn’t see him winning,” Busuttin said.

“He goes well fresh and good horses can do anything, and he is a good horse. If he got home over the top of them I wouldn’t be surprised, but realistically I’d say fourth or fifth.”

Safely through the Waikato Sprint, Sangster would head to Melbourne for the Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 3 and the Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) on March 16.

He then heads to Sydney for the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 31 and the Australian Derby (2400m) on April 14.

One thing he doesn’t have for his Australian campaign yet is a jockey, though Busuttin will be seeking an Australian-based rider.

Successful Victoria Derby rider Hugh Bowman is the frontrunner for his Sydney races but won’t be available in Melbourne and it’s possible someone from there could get the job.

“There’s a lot of good riders in Australia. You could basically throw your colours in the room and wherever they land you’d be happy,” Busuttin said.

Busuttin has more realistic chances of Group One honours on Saturday with Six O’Clock News in the International Stakes (2000m).

The race has drawn a less than stellar field and if favourite Shez Sinsational is below her best Busuttin’s Wellington Cup winner could be a chance.
