Wet track key to Code Word

John Marzol is hoping the effects of the recent wet weather in Sydney continue until Saturday for his mudlark Code Word.

The gelding, who posted consecutive city victories on heavy tracks in June, will line up in the starstable.com.au Handicap (2000m).

Code Word was doing his best work late when seventh to My Destiny over an unsuitable 1300m second-up in December and has been limited by hard tracks and big weights at his three subsequent runs in the country.

“The tracks have been hard and he probably hasn’t quite been at his right trip,” Marzol said of Code Word’s recent runs.

The five-year-old had two starts at his home track of Moruya in January, lumping 59kg when ninth over 1650m two starts ago and 57.5kg when a last-start sixth in the Moruya Cup (1930m), both on good tracks.

Code Word will carry 55.5kg at Rosehill thanks to the three-kilo claim of apprentice Shaun Guymer and with the track rated a slow (7) he should get his favoured wet conditions.

“He loves it wet. Heavy preferably,” Marzol said.

“I’m expecting him to improve a lot.”

The negative for Marzol is the fact Code Word missed a run at Warwick Farm last weekend when the meeting was washed out.

He isn’t sure how much impact it will have but fears it could leave his charge vulnerable.

“Whether he is just that little bit short of a run because he missed that race I’m not sure,” Marzol said.

“We’ll find out on Saturday.”
