Outgoing New Zealand cricket coach John Wright has called for a more ruthless self-analysis from the Black Caps’ batsmen after a disappointing West Indies tour ended early on Monday.

New Zealand lost the second Test by five wickets at Sabina Park in Kingston after falling by nine wickets in the first. They won just one of five ODIs, and lost the two opening Twenty20s.

The Black Caps sit eighth on the ICC’s Test rankings, with only Bangladesh below them.

Wright admits the West Indies tour has been a disappointing way to end his time in charge, but says the losses have highlighted areas that need work, particularly when it comes to batting.

“You have to have self-responsibility and be accountable for your actions in the middle,” the 82-Test former New Zealand opener said.

“You just can’t come off and wave it away with phrases like ‘it’s the way I play’ or ‘I didn’t quite execute’.

“It’s a brutal game at the international level, and you have to be very brutal in your self-analysis and very honest.”

That brutal honesty also needs to extend throughout the whole team, Wright added.

Players needed to know they wouldn’t get a warm welcome back to the change room if they were dismissed playing an inappropriate shot.

“That’s the sort of environment you need to create – ruthless self-analysis, combined with pretty strong standards and peer pressure from your teammates. And that’s an area we can grow in.”

Wright says the Black Caps’ batting line-up also needs to work on rotating the strike, a key skill which is still lacking.

“And the players have to understand that it’s not wise to make the same mistake over and over again – you’ve got to learn from your mistakes.”

Wright began his 18-month tenure as coach by guiding New Zealand to the 50-over World Cup semi-finals in Sri Lanka early in 2011. Later that year, he masterminded the Black Caps’ first Test win over Australia in 26 years with a seven-run win in Hobart.

Mike Hesson takes over at the helm when the Black Caps travel to India for two Tests, the first beginning in Hyderabad on August 23, and two T20 matches.
