Lehmann gets bronze at Adelaide Oval

South Australia cricket great and former Test batsman Darren Lehmann has been immortalised in a bronze sculpture at Adelaide Oval.

The sculpture was unveiled before Wednesday’s second day of play in the fourth Test between Australia and India. It shows the stocky left-hander with his bat raised after a straight drive.

Lehmann’s sculpture stands nearby another bronze of former South Australia and Test quick Jason Gillespie on the oval’s western side.

Port Lincoln artist Ken Martin sculpted the image of Lehmann which was financed by businessman Basil Sellers.

ABC commentator Jim Maxwell and South Australia Cricket Association president Ian McLachlan spoke at the unveiling of the sculpture.

Lehmann made his Test debut in 1998.

He scored five centuries in 27 matches and played in Australia’s 1999 and 2003 World Cup-winning sides at one-day international level.

Known for his love of a beer and a smoke, the 41-year-old Lehmann is coach of Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League Twenty20 competition.
