Head named by SA for one-day debut

Two weeks after being hit by a car, emerging batsman Travis Head was named by South Australia for his one-day debut in Thursday’s pivotal clash with NSW.

Head was hospitalised after being struck by a car outside an Adelaide hotel while celebrating a Sheffield Shield victory with teammates on January 27.

The 19-year-old said he was lucky to suffer only minor head injuries in the accident, initially fearing his successful summer of cricket was over.

“I was really lucky in the end,” Head said on Wednesday.

Head has entrenched himself in SA’s Shield team and led the state to a recent title in the national under-19 championships, where he was named player of the tournament for a second year in a row.

The left-handed batsmen and Redbacks officials said Head was not drunk or in the wrong when struck by a car, but Head said he couldn’t comment on the specifics as it remained a police matter.

“It was a scary time,” he said.

SA can secure a spot in the one-day final against Victoria by downing the Blues at the SCG.

NSW captain Ben Rohrer will play in the fixture, despite a hectic travel schedule.

Rohrer has been summoned into Australia’s Twenty20 squad for a game against the West Indies on Wednesday in Brisbane.

He will then fly to Sydney on Thursday morning for the domestic one-dayer against SA, then travel to Hobart on Friday to join the Australia A squad preparing for a series against the British Lions.

NSW wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will also front against SA, the day after playing in the Australian T20 team.

NSW: Ben Rohrer (capt), Sean Abbott, Trent Copeland, Tim Cruickshank, David Dawson, Luke Doran, Brad Haddin, Scott Henry, Nic Maddinson, Peter Nevill, Gurinder Sandhu, Chris Tremain, Adam Zampa (12th man to be named, one to be omitted).

SA: Johan Botha (capt), Cullen Bailey, Dan Christian, Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson, Jake Haberfield, Travis Head, Michael Klinger, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Alex Ross, Chadd Sayers (12th man to be named, one to be omitted).
