Amla retires, but Sth Africa march on

Hashim Amla followed his captain’s lead on Sunday, retiring after reaching a half century as South Africa went to lunch at 4-204 on the final day of their three-day tour match against Australia A.

On Saturday, Proteas’ skipper Graeme Smith retired after reaching 60 to give his teammates a chance to bat on the placid SCG pitch, and Amla followed suit on Sunday, pulling the pin after chalking up 53 runs in response to Australia A’s 7(dec)-480.

Lower order batsman JP Duminy became the second legitimate wicket to fall in the South African innings when he chopped an Andrew McDonald delivery onto his stumps, to be out for 31.

AB de Villiers (15) and Jacques Rudolph (6) were the not out batsman at lunch.

McDonald had figures of 1-39, while part-time offspinner Glenn Maxwell claimed the wicket of Alviro Petersen (38) on Saturday for figures of 1-56.
