Gold Coast officials are hopeful their pleas for honesty with Suns players over drug use allegations are being heard.

Club chief executive Andrew Travis confirmed on Friday a player came forward in the wake of published photos appearing to show midfielder Harley Bennell using illicit drugs in a Launceston hotel room in March 2013.

Travis said the player had admitted to being on that trip to Tasmania with Bennell, although there is no suggestion of wrong-doing by the unnamed player.

“We did have a player come forward to us in the last 24 hours in relation to the media and confirm they did travel to Launceston in March 2013,” Travis told ABC Gold Coast.

“We’re appreciative they’ve made that choice to come forward and we’ll now obviously work through that with them.

“There’s no suggestion they’ve done anything wrong. They were in Launceston, that’s all we know at this stage.”

Travis has previously urged players to come clean to the club about any knowledge or involvement they may have relating to drug use within the playing group after a media report claimed former Suns player Karmichael Hunt had named several teammates as cocaine users in a report to police.

Suns coach Rodney Eade welcomed the admission and hoped the involvement of the AFL Players’ Association (AFLPA) will also prevent the club from being blindsided as it was last weekend.

“It’s good that he’s done that. I don’t think there’s anything untoward there,” Eade said.

“I don’t think they’re involved in any way but they spoke about being there.

“The AFLPA has been involved and they’re encouraging players to come to them. So it’s outside the club.”

Travis said he’ll be as open as possible with the public about the Suns’ investigation into drug use but he wouldn’t be naming the player who came forward at this point in time.

“Once we’ve got enough information, yesterday was obviously consumed by so many other things that we didn’t have time to sit down and work through at length what happened,” he said.

“But we acknowledge the coming forward and we’ll follow that up again today.

“That’s what we’ve said all along, please come forward, give us information, give us facts and then we’ll be able to deal with it rather than respond to media speculation.”
