Brisbane play Geelong on Sunday, 12.10pm at the GABBA.  The Cats will be expected to win this one, with the Lions likely to continue their tough start to the 2014 season.  New Lions coach Justin Leppitsch couldn’t have asked for a tougher two weeks, first having to tackle Hawthorn in round 1 and now the Cats in round 2.

Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown will have to do something special at home this round for the Lions to worry the Cats.  Despite a pretty good losing performance against Hawthorn, the Lions are likely to struggle against an in-form Cats outfit.  While the home ground advantage and mid-day kick-off time will favour Brisbane, they are minus suspended midfielder Tom Rockliff and look thin against Geelong.

Geelong premiership ruckman Trent West harbours no ill-will towards the Cats as he meets them in just his second AFL match as a Lion on Sunday.

Despite being squeezed out just two years after playing a key role in the 2011 flag success along with Brad Ottens, West has nothing but respect and admiration for his old club.

Rather than proving a point against the Cats at the Gabba, the 26-year-old is only interested in proving his worth to his new Brisbane Lions teammates.

He started on the right foot in his Brisbane debut last week, kicking a career-best three goals in the round one loss to Hawthorn.

“It’s been a great change so far, I’ve really enjoyed being up here,” West told AAP.

“I don’t think I have much to prove. I’m pretty sure they (Geelong) understand.

“It’s about going out there and playing my role for the Lions.”

West had eight seasons at the Cattery for 55 senior games but the appearances dried up last year as he battled form and injury before the likes of Mark Blicavs, Hamish McIntosh, Dawson Simpson and Nathan Vardy were preferred.

He was forced to quickly choose at the end of trade week in October whether to head north when Brisbane’s interest came out of the blue.

“I could have stayed at Geelong,” he said. “I love the town and love the club but I had to weigh up what was best for me and opportunities up here outweighed that.

“I had to grab it with both hands and I’ve loved every step so far.”

West, playing second ruckman to Matthew Leuenberger, expects it will be weird to play his former teammates but is treating it like “just another game”.

“It doesn’t really worry me to be honest, maybe it’s good to have it nice and early in the year to get it out of the way and everyone can move on,” he said.

Ironically, West’s last game for Geelong was against Brisbane in last season’s final round, when the Cats escaped by a point at home.

The Lions came back from 53 points down to win their last Gabba clash, but James Kelly promised the visitors would be more wary of Brisbane’s ability this year.

“I think a couple of times we’ve played them maybe we weren’t on as much as we should have been,” Kelly told the Cats website.
