Trainer Tim Pike wasted no time adding to his winning run, landing another feature just over a week after Reginald’s triumph in the Port Hedland Cup (2200m). This time it was his consistent star Border Control who stole the show, extending his remarkable streak by taking out the $40,000 Tabtouch Broome Sprint (1300m).
Already a cult figure in Pilbara racing thanks to five consecutive victories at Port Hedland – including the Richardson Sprint (1200m) – Border Control has thrived since making the move from Sydney to Pike’s yard, proving the stable change a masterstroke.
Sent out as the $3.20 favourite, Border Control recovered from a tardy start to power home 1 ½ lengths ahead of Make Your Point, much to the delight of punters. Natasha Faithfull, last season’s Australian Provincial Champion Jockey, delivered a perfectly timed ride, settling in fifth before darting through on the fence when the leader rolled off at the top of the straight.
“He’s an absolute machine,” Pike said. “He’s beautiful, a perfect horse. I was a little bit worried at the corner, but as soon as he picked up the bit away he went.”
Pike was quick to credit Faithfull’s efforts. “Thanks Tash for the ride. It was ten out of ten,” he said.
Looking ahead, Pike hinted that Border Control may freshen up before targeting races in Albany, potentially following the same path Roy Rogers took with Espirito after his Broome Sprint win last year.
Faithfull, who continues to ride in superb form, said she always felt confident despite the slow start. “I was travelling pretty strongly at the 600m,” she said. “I thought I had the upper hand. The leader rolled off and we got a nice run along the fence.”
The Broome carnival could yet bring more glory for Pike, with Reginald likely to contest the Broome Cup on Saturday.
