Match fit colt ready for Grand test in The Rosebud 2025

Peter Snowden has deliberately timed Grand Prairie’s campaign to ensure he arrives at The Rosebud third-up in a bid to get him to the Listed race with a fitness edge.

While four of his five rivals will be kicking off their preparations in Saturday’s sprint, including early $2.50 favourite Pallaton and second elect Skyhook ($3.90), Grand Prairie ($7.50) has had the benefit of recent racing.

Snowden said it had been the plan to get the colt to the feature hard fit in the hope his match practice could provide an early-season advantage, especially on a rain-affected track.

“That was the idea. We wanted to have a bit of fitness on our side leading into those better class races because sometimes you can be the fitter horse, not the best horse, to get one of those races nice and early,” Snowden said.

“I’m banking on his fitness being a key factor to his chances on Saturday.

“It’s a Listed race so it would be nice if he could get that one up.”

Raced by Yulong, Grand Prairie resumed with a determined midweek win on the Kensington track last month and stuck to his task when second to Stardeel on a testing heavy 10 surface at Rosehill on August 2.

He drops 100m in distance to 1100m in the Rosebud and from a low draw in barrier three, Snowden expects a bold showing.

While Grand Prairie might not quite be in the league of barn mates and fellow three-year-olds Beadman and Raging Force, who are being aimed towards some of the spring features, Snowden says he is a talented horse with upside.

“He’s not that class but he’s an improving horse,” he said.

“He’s got a great mindset, he’s great to work with and those sort of horses, while they’re improving, it’s hard to say how far they’re going to go.”

With the Missile Stakes washed out last weekend and not reprogramed, the Rosebud will mark the first stakes event of the 2025-26 season in Sydney and is among the lead-up races for the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.

The race has been reduced to a field of six with the early scratching of Shaggy.
