Snapshot of day nine at Wimbledon

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Roger Federer – if there was any doubt that Federer is back to his best in 2017 he erased it by belting his 2016 Wimbledon conqueror Milos Raonic 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to storm into the Wimbledon semi-finals.

STAT OF THE DAY: 126 – that’s the number of aces tournament leader Sam Querrey has thumped down so far and 30 of them came against Andy Murray – still he has a long way to go to match the 212 Goran Ivanisevic set a tournament record with in his 2001 title run.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I can’t believe it – 100 matches. It’s a lot. I’m very happy that my body kept me going all these years,” on a day when two of his closest rivals’ bodies gave out Roger Federer had every right to smile that his is still in good nick at age 35.

HOW THE AUSSIES FARED: Men’s doubles top seed John Peers and his Finnish partner Henri Kontinen moved into the semis with a 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 6-7 (7-4) 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 win over Kiwi Michael Venus and America’s Ryan Harrison. Peers then lost his third round mixed doubles in three sets with German partner Sabine Lisicki. In the women’s doubles Aussie pair Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty lost their quarter-final to second-seeded Russians Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 4-6 6-4. Blake Ellis advanced to the third round of the boy’s singles.

TALKING POINT: Injuries. Novak Djokovic retired hurt with an elbow problem and Murray was lame for the last two sets of his quarter-final with his hip injury. They join Nick Kyrgios, Feliciano Lopez and Viktor Troicki as high-profile players to have their Wimbledon run cruelled by injury.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Seven-time champion Federer cruised past Raonic and will face Tomas Berdych, who benefited from the Djokovic retirement in one semi. In the other half Marin Cilic prevailed in five sets over Gilles Muller, while Querrey also took five to get past Murray.
