Goffin secures another Masters semi berth

Belgian David Goffin has secured his second straight semi-final appearance in a Masters Series event, defeating Gilles Simon 3-6 6-2 6-1 in Miami.

The 15th seed, who reached the final four at the Masters level for the first time at Indian Wells last week, will play the winner of the night session clash between world No.1 Novak Djokovic and Czech Tomas Berdych.

“I served well today, that helped me in a lot of the rallies,” Goffin said.”

“I’m happy with how I’m playing at the moment. I’m confident for the rest of the tournament and the season.”

Goffin blew six break-point opportunities in losing the opening set, but the Belgian began to find his range and turned the momentum as Simon struggled in the Miami sea breeze.

“There was a bit of wind. It was not easy to finish the points,” Goffin said.

“I was missing volleys, smashes and easy point. But I stayed in the match and focussed on what I had to do. I started feeling better and better with each game.”

Australian Nick Kyrgios will attempt to secure his place in the last four of a Masters event for the first time when he takes on Canadian 12th-seed Milos Raonic on Thursday (Friday AEDT).

Kei Nishikori takes on Frenchman Gael Monfils in Thursday’s other quarter-final.
