Ebden wins, Dokic withdraws in California

Australian Matthew Ebden won his first-round match on Thursday at the Indian Wells tournament in California.

Ebden scored an impressive 6-1 4-6 6-4 victory over Igor Kunitsyn of Russia.

Earlier on Thursday, fellow Australian Jelena Dokic withdrew with injury early in her opening-round match against Argentina’s Gisela Dulko.

Dokic pulled out after just nine minutes in the first set with a right wrist injury, sending Dulko into the second round where she will face second-seeded Maria Sharapova.

Similarly, Irina Falconi of the United States and Alexandra Dulgheru played into the second set of their match before the Romanian retired with a left knee injury to give Falconi a 4-6 5-2 win.

Greta Arn of Hungary lasted five games and was down 4-1 in the opening set of her match with Johanna Larsson of Sweden when she retired with neck problems.

Other women’s winners included Simona Halep of Romania, Austria’s Tamira Paszek, Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa, Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinoza, Kazakhstan’s Ksenia Pervak, Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine and Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.

On the men’s side, Robby Ginepri became the first American to win his way into the second round by beating Paoli Lorenzi of Italy 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Lukasz Kubot of Poland came away with a 6-4 6-2 victory against Ivo Karlovic, who complained about having to share a practice court on Tuesday.

Other men advancing to the second round were Andreas Seppi of Italy, Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo, Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, Sergly Stakhovsky of the Ukraine and two Spaniards, Pablo Andujar and Albert Ramos.
