Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens showed no ill-effects from her brutal French Open campaign as she eased into the last 16 with a routine 6-2 6-2 win over Katerina Siniakova.

Fifth-seed Bertens saved a match point and was overcome by cramps after her win against Sara Errani on Wednesday, leaving the court in agony seated in a wheelchair.

She had also struggled past Katarina Zavatska in round one and had spent more than five hours on court, so was grateful as she rolled past an error-prone Sinialova in 58 minutes.

Bertens was especially impressive on serve, landing 81 per cent of her first serves in the first set, allowing Siniakova few opportunities to get into the match.

Earlier on Friday, top seed Simona Halep produced a ruthless display to dismiss American Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-1 in 54 minutes.

There was more delight for France as Caroline Garcia battled from behind and needed six match points before knocking out 16th-seeded Belgian Elise Mertens 1-6 6-4 7-5.

The Frenchwoman, who reached the quarter-finals in 2017, meets third seed Elina Svitolina next after the 26-year-old Ukrainian eliminated Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-5 6-4.

Anisimova knocked Halep out of last year’s quarter-finals when the Romanian was the defending champion in their first-ever meeting at the clay grand slam.

“I took the game in my hands,” said Halep, who next meets Poland’s Iga Swatiek in the next phase after she dispatched Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-3 6-2.

“Last year I was very far from the court, and I played fairly short so she could play her game. When she has time and she has the ball in the right position, she is very dangerous and she plays great. I think I did a great job,” Halep said.
