Aussie Thompson bundled out in Brisbane

Australian wildcard Jordan Thompson has been bundled out 6-2 6-4 in the Brisbane International first round by American rising star Jared Donaldson on Monday night.

The Australian Davis Cup player who made the Brisbane quarterfinals last year had no answer to 21-year-old Donaldson in their first meeting, bowing out in 90 minutes at Pat Rafter Arena.

World No.54 Donaldson – ranked 40 spots higher than the 23-year-old Thompson – will meet the winner of the first-round clash between Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Thompson had been hoping to launch another giant killing run in Brisbane.

Last year Thompson also snapped up a wildcard before upsetting world No.21 David Ferrer on his way to a quarterfinal berth on Brisbane debut.

It set him up for an Australian Open surge in which he upset world No.39 Joao Sousa of Portugal to reach the second round of his home grand slam for the first time.

Thompson went on to enjoy a 2017 season in which he claimed the scalp of Andy Murray at Queen’s Club and the highly fancied Jack Sock in Australia’s Davis Cup quarterfinal win over the United States in Brisbane in April.

Thompson was broken in the match’s opening game by Donaldson who struck 11 winners to the Australian’s four to take the first set in 39 minutes.

Thompson dug deep in the second but the end was nigh after Donaldson secured the break in the seventh game with a forehand winner.

Donaldson thrashed a total of 18 winners compared to Thompson’s 11.

Thompson will remain in Brisbane to play doubles with former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Thompson and Hewitt open their doubles campaign against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and American Ryan Harrison on Tuesday.
