Another epic looms for Pole at Aust Open

Their past meetings might be a convenient haze but Agnieszka Radwanska doesn’t need details before she heads into her Australian Open quarter-final against Victoria Azarenka.

Radwanska is well aware she trails the Belarusian 3-6, most worryingly losing their past meeting this month in Sydney.

The third-seeded Azarenka scraped past her Polish opponent in three sets in the semi-final and Radwanska knows two things.

The match will be tight and there will be nothing new in it for either player.

Radwanska won in Tokyo last year in their previous clash in another three-set struggle.

“I just remember Sydney, Tokyo last year and, then before, I can’t remember,” Radwanska said.

“I think when you play someone a couple of times you already know what to expect, so I think it’s not going to be any surprises there.”

Radwanska, the eighth seed, crushed 22nd-seeded German Julia Goerges in the fourth round and knows she will need to bring that form to the next encounter.

“I really had a very good week in Sydney and played a couple of good matches over there against top players,” she said.

“I was playing Vika as well over there so I just hope I can bring the same tennis like I did (against Goerges).”

The pair have known each other for 10 years since their junior days and have had an intense rivalry.

“We played juniors together – we’re the same age – so we played a lot of matches against each other.

“I think it’s always three sets, always tough ones. For sure, I have to play 100 per cent to beat her.”

Azarenka is one of the most reticent of players off court but agreed she was beginning to find Radwanska a more troublesome prospect.

“Well, I take it match by match,” the third seed said. “I’m just going to be focused on my next match instead of focusing too much on what’s going to happen after.

“(Radwanska) is a very tough opponent. We had so many great matches, long matches, long rallies.

“I’m sure it’s going to happen again but I think she improved tremendously since the end of last year.

“You could see the difference. She became more aggressive. She improved her serve.

“It’s going to be a really tough battle.”
