Having waited patiently for his A-League call-up, Sydney FC goalkeeper Ivan Necevski isn’t going to give up his spot without a fight.

Necevski turned in a brilliant man-of-the-match performance between the sticks in Sydney’s 2-1 win over Adelaide on Sunday.

The 31-year-old’s effort made it hard to believe he was Sydney’s second-choice keeper behind Liam Reddy until two weeks ago.

Reddy was dropped following Sydney’s 5-2 drubbing by Newcastle and since then Necevski has made it impossible for coach Vitezslav Lavicka to drop him.

“I’m happy to get a run with two games back-to-back,” said Necevski, who has been used mostly as a second choice keeper since joining Sydney in 2007.

“I absolutely want to keep playing, there would be something wrong if I didn’t.

“The last couple of weeks have been really good, it’s nice getting some positive results.”

Necevski admits there have been some down times waiting for his chance and credited coaching staff in particular goalkeeping coach Zeljko Kalac for getting him prepared for battle every week.

“It gets frustrating at times. You come to training preparing yourself as though you are going to play but when you don’t get the nod your head can go down,” he said.

“But you have to pick yourself up and keep going and I’ve been patient waiting for my chance and hopefully now I can hold it.

“It’s been very good with Zeljko coming in, he works us hard and it’s really paying off for me.”

Necevski said youngsters like Mitchell Mallia and Joel Chianese had helped rejuvenate the Sky Blues.

“They’ve brought a lot of pace and a lot of raw talent and they showed that with the goals they scored,” he said.

“A little bit of change can be good sometimes, it’s changed the dynamics of the team.

“You get different responses and reactions from players and it’s been positive from us.”
