Guidetti selected for Croatia friendly

Feyenoord forward John Guidetti was on Tuesday selected for Sweden’s upcoming friendly away to Croatia, Sweden coach Erik Hamren said.

The 19-year-old had been widely tipped to be included in the squad for the February 29 match after a prolific season in the Dutch league where he is on loan from Manchester City.

“He has deserved his spot considering the results he has made,” Hamren told a news conference, noting that the player had scored 18 goals in 17 matches.

Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic of AC Milan, who was also selected for the friendly, has recently weighed in on behalf of Guidetti.

Hamren said it was very likely that Guidetti would play in Croatia, thereby making his debut on the national team.

The friendly was the last tune up before Hamren sometime in mid May names his squad for the Euro 2012 finals where Sweden was to play England, France and Ukraine.

Guidetti could play alone on top or pair up with another forward, Hamren said, adding he liked the player’s “cocky attitude but also that he was humble.”

Hamren said Sweden needed “some luck” and not suffer injuries since its pool of players was not as large as that of France or England.

A category of players that Sweden was in need of were wing backs, Hamren said.
