Wallabies decimated by injury

The Wallabies are scouring the country for replacements to send to Argentina to bolster their decimated troops ahead of their final Rugby Championship match.

And coach Robbie Deans said due to visa and flight availability, the new players may not make it to Rosario in time for a training session before the Test.

Five Australian players were forced from the Loftus Versfeld field during the 31-8 loss to South Africa, with the Wallabies forced to finish the match a player down after they’d exhausted their allowable substitutions.

Utility back Adam Ashley-Cooper was cleared of serious injury after being knocked out cold just before halftime as he made a try-saving tackle on Springboks fullback Zane Kirchner.

He was taken from the field in a medi-cab and then driven to hospital.

“Adam had a CT scan and he’s been cleared and he’s up and about so that’s encouraging for him because that didn’t look good,” Deans said.

Fullback Berrick Barnes is also likely to return home after suffering a chest injury midway through the first half and he was also sent for post-match x-rays.

Backrower Radike Samo suffered a shoulder injury that would be further assessed, so too winger Digby Ioane, who hurt his knee cap, while hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau had neck and shoulder soreness.

Coach Robbie Deans said Australia would be scratching around for available replacements.

Nick Cummins and Ben Tapuai are with the squad but the Wallabies will need at least one back and a backrower.

“We’re doing those numbers now, we are going to have to bring some players across from Australia and it’s going to be very challenging because we’ve delved so deep into our resources,” Deans said.

“Organising a visa for Argentina isn’t straight-forward so there is the possibility we may have players who don’t get there in there in time for training.”
