Foley confirms Super exit from Waratahs

NSW are in the market for a new Super Rugby coach after Michael Foley handed in his resignation on Tuesday.

The Waratahs confirmed Foley’s decision to leave the club after just one year as head coach, with reports suggesting he’ll soon be announced as the new mentor of rival Australian franchise the Western Force in a three-year deal.

Foley’s decision to quit the Waratahs came after a miserable season in charge, the side ending the year with eight consecutive losses.

Despite this the NSW board had decided to continue on with Foley at the helm for 2013.

His departure comes a day after Waratahs chairman Edwin Zemancheff stood down from the board. The cleanout at Moore Park is only expected to continue.

Foley said his four-year association with the Waratahs as an assistant and then head coach was rewarding despite the failure of the 2012 season.

“I’d like to thank the organisation and team for their support throughout my time here, particularly over the past season,” Foley said in a statement.

“While it’s been a challenging season for everyone, being involved over the last four years has been extremely rewarding, particularly being part of a team that was able to play in two finals series.

“I believe that the squad and organisation has the potential to turn it around and I wish everyone the best for next season.”

Speaking on behalf of the Waratahs rugby board, Al Baxter said the club wished Foley well.

“On behalf of everyone involved with the Waratahs, I would like to thank Michael Foley for his dedication and commitment to the team and the organisation, not just over the past year but throughout his time with NSW,” Baxter said.

“We wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

The board will now oversee the process of appointing a new head coach.

“We firmly believe that this position is a highly sought-after role and will begin the appointment process with immediate effort,” added Baxter.

The Australian coach of French league side Stade Francais, Michael Cheika has been heavily linked to the Waratahs job after already turning down an offer to coach the Force.

Foley will take over from Richard Graham at the West Australian franchise.
