Veterans back in Aussie table tennis squad

Australia will send a diverse squad of seasoned veterans and young up-and-comers to London in July for the fierce Olympic table tennis competition.

Six Australians – three men and three women – have qualified for the individual and team events at the Games after four days of tough qualifying competition.

Australia’s top-ranked player and Commonwealth Games silver medallist William Henzell was the first to make the cut.

The 29-year-old fended off his younger rivals to cruise to his third Olympics after an undefeated run at the Oceania Olympic qualification tournament in Sydney.

Henzell will be joined by young gun Justin Han, who qualified for his first Olympic Games at just 20.

Experience played a major part in the women’s selection, with three-time Olympians Jian Fang Lay and Miao Miao lining up for their fourth Games.

It was smooth sailing for 39-year-old Jian but not so for long-time teammate Miao Miao.

The 31-year-old only just managed to beat Vivian Tan, who was looking like a sure thing in the lead-up to the event.

Australia’s head table tennis coach Jens Lang said Miao Miao had been underperforming recently and had lost several times in the past to Tan.

“(Then) in the crucial deciding match to decide who’s going to get the singles spot for the Olympic Games, she beat her 4-3,” Lang told AAP.

“Vivian was spewing, she was very, very disappointed.”

Under new Olympic regulations, each national team at the London Games will be restricted to just two players in the singles instead of three.

This rule was introduced after China won every medal in the individual table tennis events at the Beijing Games.

As Australia qualified more players than any other Oceania nation, it will also compete in the three-player team event in London.

Vivian Tan and Robert Frank will fill those spots.

Coach Lang said qualifying the maximum six players was exactly the outcome they had been hoping and training for.

“We are very, very happy with the outcome of this event, absolutely,” said Lang.

The squad will have several international competitions leading up the July Games including events in Germany and the UK.

“There’s going to be lots of competition coming up and lots of training obviously in order to ensure we are best prepared for the Olympic Games,” Lang said.
