Aust to have smallest Games team since ’92

Australia’s Olympic team in London will be the nation’s smallest at a summer Games since 1992, following the failure of the men’s soccer team to qualify.

The Olyroos’ 1-0 loss to the United Arab Emirates in the Asian qualifying tournament on Thursday morning put an end to their hopes of making it to London and they’ll join the women’s team watching the Games from the outer.

The women missed a berth to London when they finished third at the Asian qualifying tournament in September.

Australia will not be represented in soccer at the Olympics for the first time since 1984.

The Australian Olympic Committee had aimed to send a team of 420 to London, but may now have to settle on around 370 athletes at best.

The soccer teams would have taken 18 players each, while the women’s volleyball team has also failed to qualify, reducing the projected team by another 12.

The men’s volleyball team is also in danger of missing out and will need to finish in the top two at the Asian Continental qualification event in Japan in June.

Of the six team sports at the Olympics, Australia has qualified men’s and women’s teams in basketball, hockey and water polo, but will not be competing in handball, which was never considered a realistic chance.

Australia sent 279 athletes to Barcelona for the 1992 Olympics, coming home with seven gold medals, while 417 went to Atlanta in 1996.
