Wagner edges Asada in ISU event

US champion Ashley Wagner upset two-time world champion Mao Asada of Japan in Saturday’s free skate final to win the women’s title at the ISU Four Continents Championships.

Wagner, who captured her first American title only two weeks ago, won the overall competition with 192.41 points to 188.62 for Asada, the 2010 Winter Olympic runner-up who had won Friday’s short program.

American Caroline Zhang was third with 176.18 points with Japan’s Kanako Murakami, the 2010 world junior champion, fourth on 169.32.

In the free skate, Wagner scored 128.34 points with Asada next on 124.37, the winner serving notice she should be a factor in next month’s world championships in France.

Wagner was third after the short programme in the US championships but rallied with a stunning free skate effort.

Earlier, China’s Sui Wenjing and Han Cong won the pairs short program with 66.75 points. Americans Caydee Denney and John Coughlin were second on 63.35 and US rivals Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker were third on 62.42.

“We did our best in the short program,” Han said. “It’s amazing and wonderful. We feel so happy.”

Sui and Han will attempt their quad throws in Sunday’s free skate final.

“We will do both quad throws and I hope we will succeed,” Han said.

Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the reigning world champions, edged Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the reigning Olympic champions, to win the short dance routine.

Davis and White scored 72.15 points, .55 of a point more than Virtue and Moir, but either can take the title by winning Sunday’s Free Dance.
