The PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club.
This will be the regular season finale as the players jockey for a position in the top 125 standings to extend their seasons.
Sedgefield Country Club has hosted this event since 2008. It is a Par 70 course measuring at 7177 yards. There are 48 sand bunkers and 13 water hazards that include twelve creeks and one pond.
The course was closed in May this year as the greens were converted from bentgrass to champion bermudagrass.
Teeing it up this week are seven past champions including defending champ Webb Simpson, Arjun Atwal (2010), Carl Pettersson (20080 and Brandt Snedeker (2007).
Joining them will be eight winners from this season such as Bill Haas, John Huh and Scott Stallings.
We will also get to see twelve Major winners in action like Charl Schwartzel, Lucas Glover, David Toms and Y.E.Yang.
The bookies have the Top 5 in betting as: Jason Dufer 12/1, Webb Simpson 14/1, Carl Pettersson 18/1, Bill Haas 25/1 and Charl Schwartzel 25/1.
The emphasis this week will be on ball placement. If you get the ball in the right place on the fairway it will give you the right angle to the green.
Look for good driving accuracy and GIR stats this week.
It will also pay to be a good putter as the greens are still young and are very undulating. They slope from back to front.
Looking at the field this week three players appear to be ready to shine.
Tim Clark 28/1 (sportsbet.com.au)
Tim was starting to move forward in the golf world after winning the 2010 Players Championship however it all stalled when he had surgery in 2011 for tendinitis in his right arm.
He came back this season to record eight cuts from fifteen starts. Five of those cuts were turned into Top 25 finishes.
At his last two starts he has recorded finishes of:-
- T15th Canadian Open
- T11th PGA Championship
His second round in the Canadian Open was a fantastic 8 under par round of 62. And his final round in the PGA Championship was a 3 under par 69. It looks like he has his game back to where it was in 2010.
He is currently 5th in driving accuracy and is hitting 63% of GIR’s. At the Travelers Championship in June where he was T4th he hit 75% of greens in regulation and at the John Deere last month he hit 79%.
This could be the week where he puts it all together and starts his climb back up the ladder on the OWGR.
At the current odds of 28/1 he represents a great each way selection.
Ryan Moore 45/1 (sportsbet.com.au)
Ryan won the Wyndham Championship in 2009 after a play off. It is his only PGA Tour victory to date.
This season he has been progressing well with only three missed cuts from eighteen starts. He has also recorded six Top 25’s.
Highlights have been:
- T4th Arnold Palmer Invitational
- T8th Valero Texas Open
- T5th Wells Fargo Championship
- T8th John Deere Classic
His stats have him ranked 43rd in driving accuracy, 50th in strokes gained putting, 36th in birdie average and 7th in Par 4 birdie or better. Moore also hit 72% of greens in regulation two starts ago in the John Deerw.
He missed the cut last week in the PGA Championship however that form should be thrown out the window as the weather and wind was horrendous. Those conditions will not occur this week.
The course will bring back great memories for Ryan so he will feel at home and his confidence should be high.
Jason Bohn 66/1 (sportsbet.com.au)
If you want a guy who likes a course then look no further.
Jason has played this event on two occasions. In 2009 he finished 2nd after losing out in a play off to Ryan Moore and last year he was T12th.
He has only made 10 cuts this season from 22 starts however what is encouraging is his last three starts:
- 2nd- True South Classic
- C- Canadian Open
- T19th- Reno-Tahoe Open
He is in good current form and is ranked 33rd in driving accuracy this season. He also hit 72% of greens in regulation at the Canadian Open.
If he can continue his good current form and stats then he could be in with a good shout to enjoy his on going results at Sedgefield Country Club.
At 66/1 he could be a good long shot.
